The Adventure Begins

After years of studying and exams I was accepted into medical school this past April. I will be updating this blog periodically with my how I am doing and any other fun facts about my life so stay tuned.

The adventure began on April 12th, 2012. I flew to New York City for the first time to take the admissions test for Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. The trip was so much fun.

My mom, joan, joined me on this trip and we had a lot of fun. If I didn't get into school I would totally move to New York I loved that city. By far my Favorite place was Eataly. The best food ever and in the coolest location. I loved it you have to check it out.

Just a week later at about 5 in the morning I received and Email from Vita-Salute San Raffaele University informing me that I had ranked 10th with a score of 69. :-)
Thus I began to plan my move to Milano Italy for the end of September.

  1. Hi Marissa! I just stumbled upon your blog, and I'm so happy to have found it. First of all, congratulations on being accepted to San Raffaele. That is wonderful! :)I myself am looking into Italian medical schools for next year. Even though I am leaning towards Humanitas or going there to learn Italian and then going to a native language program, San Raffaele still is on my radar. I'm also American, and have been looking for a blog like yours, so thank you for sharing your journey. I look forward to more posts. If you don't mind me asking: why did you choose San Raffaele?

    1. I'm so happy to hear that people are interested in my blog. I am from minnesota. If you dont mind me asking where are you from? I like the idea of learning the language and taking a native class but I just dont have the time to wait anymore I want to get started now. I picked San Raffaele for a few reasons. First they have been very fast at responding to any questions I might come up with. They even got me in contact with a few americans in the program so I could skype and email them for their thoughts. I also took their admissions test and was accepted first at San Raffaele. Finally this program has been around for a few years now and is the only one as far as i know that prepairs you for the american medical boards as part of the curriculum. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions :-)

  2. It's not a problem, I'm from New Jersey! :) For the same reasons you mention, I'm also looking at international med programs there. If I save up enough money and can get a loan, then San Raffaele would be my top choice because as you said they do help prepare you for residency in the US. It's funny, I also spoke to an American student there who really liked it. I won't be applying anywhere until next year, but I'm looking forward to doing more research and hearing about your experiences! :) Thank you, I will let you know if I have any more questions. :)

  3. Piacere Marissa,

I am thinking of taking an entrance exam of this school in a few years.
Could I ask you how many persons are admitted in non EU students course this year?
This final ranking shows us top 40 students, but is the number of non EU students 32 or something?

I once read the article that International MD course is consisted of 32 EU students and 32 non EU students.

This year are 40 non EU students admitted to enroll?

  4. That is great to hear you are looking at this program in the next few years. I have only been here about 6 weeks but so far I think it was a good choice. There are 35 non EU slots to be filled every year. It use to be 32 but this year was increase to 35. Two of those non EU slots went to me and another girl who transferred to the second year because of our previous academic careers.

    1. Good to hear you are looking at San Raffaele. I prepped with a Kaplan book for the MCAT which I was preparing for at the same time. I also did like 100 online practice exams

  6. This is really interesting. I also looked into foreign medical schools, but in the end I decided on UMHS St. Kitts. It is closer to home and I would do better with the language of instruction being English. I am really excited to read more about your adventures abroad.
