So now that I have been accepted into school I need to start putting together all my paperwork and securing financing for my studies. This posses a totally different set of obstacle. If I had decided to go to school in the states the financing would have been simple loans, work and scholarships however I like a challenge. Most schools in Italy are so inexpensive that they do not have student loans in there banking systems, and I am unable to get a work visa right off the bat thus I need to secure my own funding for my studies before I leave. I have a few options I am pursuing but if anyone had any suggestions of were I should look into I would be more then happy to hear your suggestions. either comment on my post or email me at madonatelle@gmail.com.
I will be going to Chicago tomorrow to sign some forms at the Consulate and hopefully get my student visa. Look forward to hearing from me again soon. :-)
Hi there. I am 2nd year student. Congratulations on your acceptance. I can see this year even the non-EU citizen list is very competitive.
ReplyDeleteIt is not possible to work with your student visa. However, after you get your permit to stay for study, which takes about 2-3 months, you may work up to 20 hours per week.
The problem is, giving the current economic situation, getting a part time job is difficult. And the concept of part time job is non-existent. Italy has very rigid labor laws compared to the US. It's not like find a Wal-mart and just to start to work right away.
Also, lessons are held between 9 to 6 pm, with irregular schedules and frequent last minute changes. Even when you find a part time job, it's hard to make a flexible schedule. You will see how things are organized in Italy.
The best bet, in my opinion, would be working at a restaurant. And set up your schedule to work in the evenings/nights or or on weekends. You get paid 6 or 7 Euro per hour which is below American standard. And it requires good time management skills.
Depends on where you are from, living expenses in Milan is very expensive even if you don't go out and cook yourself all the time. It's a good idea if you can take out loans or have family support.
Thank you so much for the info it is really very helpful.
